Spotlight: Annabel Poinsette

The Wedding Singer is showing July 27-31! We reached out to Annabel Poinsette, to find out more about her and what working on this fun production has been like!

What is your favorite song in this show and why?

My favorite song is Casualty of Love. It follows a pivotal moment in the show as Robbie struggles with losing his fiancée while having a career as the Wedding Singer. It's humorous and chaotic with a thrilling dance break that leaves everyone cracking up!

What have you loved so far about working with SART?

I love the atmosphere that the directors have created. There's a feeling of camaraderie that fills the air of each rehearsal and performance. As an intern with SART, I feel incredibly supported while I continue to learn about all aspects of theatre.

Tell us about your character. What’s your favorite thing about them? What do you love about getting to portray them?

I get to portray a variety of characters in the ensemble of The Wedding Singer, and something I have found that connects a lot of moments in the show is the feeling of trying to fit in. From the leads to the members of the ensemble, these characters are yearning for something that is seemingly available to everyone around them, be it security, love, a job, happiness, etc. I love figuring out how and why each character is approaching their dreams.

How did you get into theatre?

I got into theatre after auditioning for a community theatre production in 5th grade. One of my best friends at the time convinced me to audition, and after being cast, my love for theatre bloomed. I continued to perform around my hometown with various theaters, and now I'm pursuing a BFA in Musical Theatre!

What’s your favorite thing to do in the area?

I've loved exploring downtown Asheville, especially with my fellow cast and crew members!

What about this production are you the most excited about?

I'm excited about all of the dance breaks! There are so many moments for the dancing to shine, and our choreographer Alana Patterson, in collaboration with J. Ethan Henry, has done a brilliant job of showcasing everyone's abilities.

What’s your favorite part about performing?

My favorite part of performing is being able to tell someone else's story for them. You can truly learn something from everyone, and it's important to hear multiple people's perspectives of life. Helping those stories that may remain unheard be shared with an audience is extremely rewarding.

Do you have any upcoming projects we should check out?

Once The Wedding Singer finishes, I will be an assistant stage manager for The Scarlet Letter, performed through the South Carolina New Play Festival and directed by Shelley Butler.
