Meet Sydney Roberts! She is joining us for The Hunchback of Notre Dame June 30, 2022 - July 10, 2022!
What is your favorite song in this show and why?
Out There! Hands down. And I’m not gonna lie, it may be one of my favorite songs of all time. I think everyone can relate to feeling alone or different at some point in your life, and this song is about bursting out and feeling free and fully yourself. It’s a beautiful message and musically it makes you feel like you’re flying!
What have you loved so far about working with SART?
Everyone here puts humans first. That devotion to making people feel seen, heard, and represented is what leads to such amazing storytelling at SART.
Tell us about your character. What’s your favorite thing about them? What do you love about getting to portray them?
I’m playing Clopin, who is traditionally a male-presenting character. I’m so stoked to have the opportunity to put a genderless spin on the role! They’re the king of the gypsies. I love how fiercely they defend their people, and I’m also having a lot of fun tapping into their more sinister side.
How did you get into theatre?
I’m from a theater family. I grew up in Hawaii, so you think I’d spend my childhood surfing or swimming. I did a little of that, but preferred spending my time in dark theaters and performing.
What’s your favorite thing to do in the area?
I like spending time with my animals, my fiancé, and eating at some of the awesome restaurants around Asheville.
What about this production are you the most excited about?
So many things! The music, the incredible cast, the fact that we are making this show accessible to the deaf community. This is one of my favorite musicals of all time and I am privileged to be a part of it.
What’s your favorite part about performing?
I love studying the world, the desires, the struggles, the heart of my characters, and then drawing from my own experiences to bring them to life.
Do you have any upcoming projects we should check out?
I’m taking a little break to get married, but you can see my costume work at Montford Park’s Much Ado About Nothing this month!
