The Wedding Singer is showing July 27-31! We reached out to Mario Pando, to find out more about him and what working on this fun production has been like!
What is your favorite song in this show and why?
I love Move That Thang. It’s hilariously ridiculous and I love watching Rosie getting fly with her dope rapping skillz!!
What have you loved so far about working with SART?
Everything. The friends, the shows, the mountains. It’s such a great place to work on your craft and that showcases artists from all over here in WNC.
Tell us about your character. What’s your favorite thing about them? What do you love about getting to portray them?
I am so delighted to play George. He is all my favorite 80’s musicians in one. He’s drama, flair, and a whole bunch of sparkle.
How did you get into theatre?
A school friend of mine was doing a production of Aladdin and they need more kids. I said sign me up and my life was saved.
What’s your favorite thing to do in the area?
I love eating my way through Asheville. There are so many great places to dine that you literally have a different choice for every day of the week.
What about this production are you the most excited about?
Just being in it. I had a liver transplant a year and a half ago, and didn’t think I’d be here at all. I am so grateful and humbled to be able to still have some magic to give!! Always in his name, amen!!
What’s your favorite part about performing?
“The Applause” -Lady Gaga
Do you have any upcoming projects we should check out?
I don’t have anything coming up yet but who knows what the future may bring.
Biography
The Wedding Singer is Mario's 4th show at SART and also his 3rd season here. You saw him in past performances of "Bright Star", "Something’s Afoot" & "Working". Mario started theatre as a kid in California at The Grove Theatre. Right after high school, he moved to NYC and attended AMDA. While studying, auditioning and working as a makeup artist, Mario started recording and performing with his band, DaLipstyxx. Landing gigs at CBGB’s, The Cutting Room, Webster Hall and other NYC music venues. Their song, “You’re Fierce” was picked up by KULT Records and reached the top of the charts in the NYC dance nightlife. Mario is married to Brandon Harmon, a former SART and Mars Hill Alum. The two live in Asheville with their dog Charlie and are avid watchers of The Golden Girls and I Love Lucy. So thank you SART for being a friend, there’s no more “splaining” to do!!!
